People are usually given oxygen in hospital when the dissolved oxygen in their blood drops. meaning not enough oxygen is getting to the vital organs. As air only has 21% oxygen, pure oxygen would be a fast way of returning the body to a healthy state. However, prolong use of pure oxygen is not good for the body either.

As Sain said, we need oxygen for our vital organs to continue functioning, if we are struggling to get oxygen through normal breathing, using our oxygen can help get oxygen into our blood.
