Hey! Nice question. When I was an undergraduate student I did some cool work using nematode worms. They are just tiny worms but because they are so easy to work with in the lab, they’re actually a really powerful tool for understanding how cells work. I used them to study the genetics of a protein that causes Alzheimer’s disease. We found a protein that we thought may be involved in damaging the brains of Alzheimer’s patients. We then tested the same protein in tiny fruit flies and saw that it affected the way they fly, making us even more confident that the protein was important. Now it’s being used to develop new medicines to make people deal with this disease.
