I wanted to be an interior designer! I loved drawing pictures of my room and redesigning it, looking through IKEA catalogues for inspiration. It was very 90’s though – lots of bright colours, clashing patterns and lava lamps everywhere!

I wanted to be a plumber. Can’t really remember why but I remember my mum telling me it’s good to have a practical job as people will always need trades people. People will pay anything when water is leaking all over their house and ruining their things.

When I was younger I think I changed my mind a lot about what I wanted to do. At one point I really wanted to be an Air Hostess so I could travel, and this then changed to an Interpreter (as I really liked languages). I got more into Science and Geography and I really wanted to be a Volcanologist when I was in High School.

As long as I can remember, I wanted to be a scuba diving instructor! I loved marine biology and languages and really wanted to live somewhere exotic.

But I had some brilliant chemistry and biology teachers at school who helped make me really interested in studying science – so I went to uni to become a scientist. In the end, I did teach scuba diving for a few years and I’m really pleased that I lived my dream. Now I’m back to doing scientific research in the lab. Perhaps one day I’ll find a way to do scuba and science at the same time…

I wanted to be a train driver. I was fascinated by trains and thought that driving one would allow me to travel a lot! At some point I also wanted to be a chef… And then a research scientist and that’s what I am now!
I still enjoy going on train trips, and cooking in my free time.

I wanted to design things – I loved graphic design and architecture. I loved knowing how things worked and when I was much younger I used to take things apart, and sometimes not put them back together again!
