GREAT history question! Light microscopes became better and better but eventually they reached a theoretical limit because light waves are wider than cell organelles, so we couldn’t use light to separate one organelle from another. We needed a ‘narrower’ form of radiation so we developed the electron microscope, which uses a beam of electrons instead.
