Autoimmune diseases are where our own immune system reacts against our own body. This can cause damage in whichever organ is targeted. Unfortunately, once symptoms have started to develop, the autoimmune reaction is already quite advanced. Therefore, it is pretty hard to cure the disorder once it has started, but we do have amazing drugs which can dampen down the immune system to make the symptoms get better.
There is one treatment which can be used in some very severe cases of autoimmune disease. This is known as a bone marrow transplant and it essentially what happens is that your immune system is completely wiped out by drugs, then bone marrow cells are transplanted, so that they repopulate your body. The only problem with this treatment is that is has a high death rate!
