Great question! Your science teacher may have a microscope to show you some cells. Otherwise if you search on Google for something like ‘cell microscope’ you’ll see lots of pictures of cells. Some cells are so big you can see them without any special equipment – like chicken eggs or ostrich eggs! One of the best ways to be sure that something exists is to see it with your own eyes – but sometimes your eyes can deceive you. Can you think of any examples?
Excellent suggestion from Max! There are also lots of videos on Youtube taken through microscopes. I really like this one, where you can see 2 immune cells attacking a cancer cell: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IDvUBz_zQsc
Agree with the guys! There are some really cool techniques we use to see parts of cells much clearer too – we can use coloured dyes to highlight different parts of a cell. If you google “immunohistochemistry fluorescence” you will see some cool pictures from a microscope of different cell types. See if you can spot the nucleus and the cell membrane!
Again I agree with everyone else! Microscopes are the best way to see immune cells as they are too small to be seen with the naked eye. My favourites ones are of immune cells ‘chasing’ bacteria. Here is one where a neutrophil (a type of immune cell which gobbles up microbes) is chasing a baceria around:
