This is a good question. Because science is so complicated, it takes many many people, often in multiple countries, to answer important scientific questions. Therefore sometimes it feels as though our little area of research is insignificant, but everyone’s contribution is important. Nowadays, science is very COLLABORATIVE. Noone really makes important discoveries on their own.
I feel like I do this everyday, but like Ben said, we all play a small role in a big system. I work a lot with patients and its nice to hear how drugs are changing their lives and what research means to them. I’ve also worked a lot with heart surgeons in developing a new minimally invasive technique, which was super cool and will make a difference to a lot of people.
