There are many types of white blood cell which all do different jobs to protect us. Some white blood cells can recognize pathogens like bacteria in a non-specific way. This means that we can target pathogens even if we have not been infected before, this is the innate response. They become engulfed by white blood cells such as macrophages and once they are enclosed within the cell chemicals are released to kill them. Other white blood cells are part of the adaptive response such as B cells which produce antigens to recognise the receptors on invading pathogens. This response takes a little longer but if we get infected again, the cells have memory and can mount an immune response immediately.
