      Good question Isobel… It is what we call a complex disease. This means it is caused by a combination of genes and environment. We know that there are over 100 genes which contribute to arthritis, and altogether they account for more than 50 % of the risk. We aren’t very good at knowing what envrinomental risks are, but we now know that smoking can contribute to the risk too.
